Set off round the board on the 1, 2 and 3 segments, intending to go as far as 9. Take it in turns to aim three darts at single 1, double 1 and treble 1.Then move on to 2 and so on. Score only on your target number, that is, double 1, plus single 1, plus 18 scores 3 points. At any time, Shanghai – that is, one dart in the single, one dart in the double and one dart in the treble – wins the game. But the round must be completed and if two players end with Shanghai on, say 5, the player with the most points wins.

It is customary to eliminate anybody who misses completely when aiming for 3, 5 or 7. Remember to aim for a specific target with every dart, rather than going for the general area of the number and trusting in luck.
