Darts and Poker

It may be difficult to see the connection between poker and darts, but one is there. Many dart players all over the world enjoy poker, and a number of poker players like a good game of darts. What’s the thread between these two very different games?

Distinct Rules in Poker and Darts
Both poker and darts have distinct rules that players must follow. The Tournament Director’s Association creates and informally enforces poker rules. These rules govern things like what constitutes a bet, the order of play and how players are moved from table to table in tournaments.

In cash games, each casino, or “the House” has a separate set of consistent rules that players must follow. In darts, the World Darts Federation governs things like the distance from the throwing line to the dartboard and the height of the dartboard.

Competition in Poker and Darts
Both poker and darts are highly competitive games. Both have tournaments played by people all over the world, even people coming from other countries to compete.

Of course, both poker and darts can be contested on a non-tournament level. In this case, darts, as well as poker, may be contested as some sort of casino games, with money on the line for the winner.

Variations in Poker and Darts
Both poker and darts start with some basic rules and then spread out into variations. Poker has Texas hold’em, Omaha, seven card stud, five card draw and another of other variations using the same basic rules. Darts has Cricket, standard darts and American darts among its variations, which use the same type of equipment.

Poker and Darts on Television
Many people develop and interest in playing poker because they see the best players competing on television. Darts also has televised competitions, with world championships and open competitions in various countries broadcast throughout Europe on many occasions.

While players can find poker in casinos, poker rooms and online, dart players generally have to go to a pub for their darts action. Once there however, they may be able to get involved in a league that can connect them with other dart players.
